The most common reason for a bag of organic dried fruit to bloat or expand is due to the natural gases released as the raw fruit continues to ripen and dry. The fruit inside the bag is unaffected in any way by the gases, and are just as delicious as you would expect from a Made In Nature product.
However, gases created by the fermentation process can also cause the bag to bloat. Either when storing the preservative-free, raw product in higher-than-recommended temperatures at the store, during transit, or in one’s home, can cause the moisture and the sugar in the fruit to react (starting the fermentation process). This product is safe to eat but may have a somewhat fermented taste.
We understand how serious allergies can be and we want to ensure every experience with our products is always a happy and healthy one.
We have very strict procedures in place to ensure that there is no possibility of contamination from peanuts, or any type of tree nut in our dried fruit facility. Each new lot of productS that we receive has a variety of tests performed by an outside lab before it is processed in our facility. All of our fruit goes through a water washing process before it is packaged. We have a very thorough cleaning and sanitizing process that happens in our facility between shifts and between products. Most importantly, however, our facility is used exclusively for packaging our own dried fruit.
Our products that contain nuts, which includes our Tropical Fruit Fusion, all of our Nut Fusions, our Toasted Coconut Chips and our Kale Chips are packaged in separate facilities that do also process other types of peanut and tree nuts.
Our Organic Made in Nature Apricots are a darker color because they are naturally sun-dried and 100% organic. Conventional dried apricots contain sulfur, which protects their bright orange color while acting as an unnatural drying agent. Since our all-natural apricots don’t contain sulfur they are a dark black or brown color. However, this difference has no effect on taste, flavor or healthfulness. Different can be good. Reall, really good.
Storing our organic dried fruit products in the freezer is perfectly safe and may actually prolong the shelf life of the product.
USDA certified organic products are grown and processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. They may not contain any genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Growers also use materials and practices that enhance the ecological balance of natural systems. In short, good for the Earth and better for your body.
Highly respected certifying agencies such as Quality Assurance International (QAI) conduct audits of our growers and their facilities.
More specifically, Made In Nature products meet the standards of the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 and 7 CFR Part 205; and are in accordance with the USDA’s National Organic Program.
Heck no! It wouldn’t be certified organic if it did. We control shelf life by selecting only the highest quality fruits and processing and packaging them to maintain maximum freshness and flavor.
Surprising, isn’t it? Most dried fruits use sulfur to artificially preserve their color. We do not. All organic dried fruit darkens naturally over time on the exterior due to the lack of chemical preservatives. That darkening lets you know it’s truly organic. Don’t worry, this natural darkening has no effect on taste, flavor, or healthfulness.
Made In Nature Black Mission Figs, Calimyrna Figs, Apricots, Plums, Dates and Raisins are dried naturally in the sun. The rest of our fruits are dried using clean, warm air or what is known as tunnel dried.
Yes. We do use warm air to dry some of our products but the warm air does not exceed 114 degrees Fahrenheit, nothing warm enough to qualify them as being cooked.
We search the world over looking for products that capture the most highly sought after “taste of place” that best represents that variety’s special characteristics. We’re constantly looking for the highest quality produce everywhere on the planet. Our Plums, Black Mission Figs, Raisins, Cranberries, Cherries and Apples are all grown in the US and Canada. Our Apricots and Calimyrna Figs are grown in Turkey, our Mangos in Mexico, Pineapples and Bananas in Costa Rica.
All of our dried fruits and nuts, except for mulberries, are kosher certified by the Orthodox Union.
The whitish coating you may experience is natural sugars that exist in the fruit. Our 100% organic fruit continues to ripen and dry in the bag and can release sugars, which collect on their exteriors. This is a completely natural process and in no way affects the quality or flavor of the fruit except to enhance its natural sweetness. If you would like to remove the layer of naturally occurring sugaring, simply place a 1/2 cup of dried figs in a microwave safe dish with 1 teaspoon of water. Cover loosely and microwave on high for one minute.
For maximum freshness and best results, we do recommend refrigeration, but they can be enjoyed out of the refrigerator if eaten over a shorter period of time.
