Are Made In Nature snacks organic and non-GMO?

You bet your organic appetite they are. All Made In Nature products are USDA certified organic and non-GMO, which means every ingredient in our bags and boxes is grown and processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We also partner with responsible growers who practice sustainable agriculture to ensure every snackable bite is better for the earth AND your body. Win-wins rule.

Are Made In Nature products gluten-free?

Oh, gluten. You gloriously complicated protein, you. The short answer is: yes. All of our dried fruit and snack products are naturally gluten-free. The long answer is: yes…but they're not certified gluten-free. This is because there's still a chance of cross-contamination somewhere in the manufacturing process before our raw ingredients get to our plant. Not the simplest answer, but always the honest one. That's the Made In Nature way.

One note—well, two actually. Two varieties of our Ancient Grains Supersides (Moroccan Bazaar and Mediterranean Feta) contain couscous, which has gluten. These craveable global flavors are produced in a separate facility from our dried fruits and snacks, so you can trust their gluten won't end up where it doesn't belong.

Are Made In Nature products vegan?

Almost every single one. All Made In Nature products are vegan with just one tasty exception: our Mediterranean Feta Ancient Grains Superside. Because you know…it has feta cheese. That's why we named it that.

Are Made In Nature products nut-free?

We understand how serious allergies can be and we want to ensure every experience with our products is always a happy and healthy one.

We have very strict procedures in place to ensure that there is no cross-contamination from tree nuts in our dried fruit facility. Each new lot of products that we receive has a variety of tests performed by an outside lab before it is processed in our facility. All of our fruit goes through a water washing process before it is packaged. We have a very thorough cleaning and sanitizing process that happens in our facility between shifts and between products. Most importantly, however, our facility is used exclusively for packaging our own dried fruit.

Our products that contain nuts, including coconut, which includes our Tropical Fruit Fusion, Mountain Gold, all of our Nut Fusions, our Toasted Coconut Chips and our Kale Chips are packaged in separate facilities that do also process other types of tree nuts.

Are Made In Nature products kosher?

We keep things kosher in pretty much every snack we make, and most of our Supersnacks are certified kosher by the Orthodox Union. The few exceptions are our Mountain Gold Superfuel Blend, Mediterranean Fruit Fusion, Cinnamon Citrus Nut Fusion, Kale Chips and Ancient Grain Supersides.

Is there sulfur in Made In Nature dried fruit?

Heck to the NO. We think nature nailed it when it comes to fruit, so we choose not to mess with perfection. Sulfur dioxide, on the other hand, makes a mockery of Mother Nature's best work by unnaturally preserving fruit's color and acting as a chemical drying agent. We prefer clean, untarnished flavor and food safety, thankyouverymuch. So long, sulfur.

Why are Made In Nature Apricots brown instead of orange?

Our Organic Made In Nature Apricots are bronze and beautiful because they aren't treated with sulfur dioxide. We keep the process bright and shiny by sun-drying each fruit to lock in the best possible flavor without the use of chemicals. Conventional dried apricots are sprayed with sulfur to preserve their bright orange color and act as a drying agent. We'd rather do it the natural way because if you ask us, clean, chemical-free flavor and food safety totally trump color. In fact, we think our dried apricots look perfect just the way they are. No fruit shaming here.

What's the white coating on your Dried Black Mission Figs, Smyrna Figs, Bananas and Plums?

That's just nature being nature, baby. More specifically, those little white crystals are natural sugars that have been released from the fruit during the drying process.

Here's the more scientific version: our organic fruit continues to ripen and dry even after it's packaged, and during this time, natural sugars often make their way from the inside of the fruit to the outside, collecting on the surface. It's a totally normal and natural reaction, and it does not affect flavor or quality. In fact, it actually helps enhance the fruit's natural sweetness. Yum.

If you don't jive with that and want to remove the natural sugars, that's cool too. Just place ½ cup of the dried fruit in a microwave-safe dish with one teaspoon of water, cover loosely and microwave on high for one minute. This should help clear the crystals off, leaving you with nice, clean Supersnacks that are ready to devour.

Where are Made In Nature products grown?

Ever heard the term “taste of place”? It basically describes foods that are particularly delicious when they come from a certain location with the ideal growing conditions. At Made In Nature, we search the world over for the highest quality produce from the places it grows best, like Turkey, Costa Rica, Mexico, Tunisia and the good ole U.S. of A.

Where are Made In Nature products made?

In our secret organic lair, of course. Just kidding. Our New Product Development team works out of our Boulder, Colorado test kitchen where they handle everything from ingredient sourcing to new recipe creation. Then there's our manufacturing facility, which is located in Fresno, California in the sun-soaked San Joaquin Valley.

How are Made In Nature fruits dried?

Buckle up for a bonus round because you're about to get two answers for the ask of one! Part 1: Made In Nature Black Mission Figs, Smyrna Figs, Apricots, Dates and Raisins are all dried naturally in the sun. Part 2: We dry the rest of our fruits using clean, warm air through a gentle process known as tunnel drying.

PACKAGING & STORAGE

Can I recycle Made In Nature packaging?

Our bags are made of plastic #7, which can only be recycled at certain facilities. Give your local recycling center a call before you try.

In other packaging news: from bags and boxes to packets and canisters, we're always on the lookout for packaging that will keep our products fresh, portable and affordable. We have our eyes set on compostable options, and hope to make that transition in the near future.

What is the shelf life of Made In Nature snacks?

It depends on the product, so the Best By date is going to be your best friend on this one. In general, the shelf life of one of our unopened products ranges from 8-12 months, and—quick tip—you can maximize the fresh factor of an open package by storing it in the refrigerator or freezer.

I purchased a package that is puffed up/bloated. Why did this happen, and is it still safe to eat?

There are two things that can cause what we affectionately call “pack puffery,” and neither of them are dangerous. The most common is simply that our organic dried fruits continue to ripen and dry even after being packaged. As they do, they release natural gasses, which can make the bag puff up like a little Supersnack pillow (so comfy and delicious!). Rest assured though, this process does not affect the taste or quality of the fruit inside.

The other possibility is fermentation. Since our products are preservative-free, higher-than-recommended temperatures can cause the fruit's moisture and sugars to begin fermenting, which again, releases natural gases. Whether the product warms up in the store, during transit or in your home, it is still safe to eat. It just may have a slightly fermented taste.

If you have any questions or concerns about inflation (the package kind, not the money kind), don't hesitate to contact us.
